Misinterpreting Movies Theme

by Travis Orbin

about

One of my friends started a podcast a couple of months ago. He frequently interviews creatives, and a trope he uses is misinterpreting aspects of a movie (plot point, character attribute, setting, etc.) to act as a springboard for discussion. After listening to a recent episode, I got a small burst of inspiration in the form of a fun and silly vocal hook. I went to work writing drums, then a difficult (for me) bass part. The following day, I recorded both, wrote some synth parts on the fly on my new Vermona E-piano, then recorded the vocals and handclaps. I sent it to my pal Gabriel Riccio for some vocal pointers, as I had only been shedding for about a month at the time. I re-tracked some stuff, mixed it, had my pal Taylor Larson master it, and ta-da: a theme song composed, recorded and mixed inside of 48 hours! It was a fun exercise and doubled as a great birthday gift to my friend. Happy Birthday, Tyrice!
